Grand Cadaver, Grand Cadaver is a Swedish death metal supergroup formed in 2020 in Gothenburg and Stockholm, bringing together veterans of the extreme metal scene with a shared passion for the raw, buzzsaw-driven sound of classic Swedish death metal. The band features Mikael Stanne (vocals, Dark Tranquillity, The Halo Effect), Stefan Lagergren (guitar, The Grifted, ex-Treblinka/Expulsion), Alex Stjernfeldt (guitar, Novarupta, Let Them Hang), Christian Jansson (bass, Pagandom, ex-Dark Tranquillity), and Daniel Liljekvist (drums, Vorder, ex-Katatonia). Rooted in the late '80s and early '90s Stockholm death metal scene, their music channels the iconic HM-2 pedal sound while infusing modern energy and their collective experience from decades in bands spanning thrash, doom, and progressive metal. Conceived as a side project during the COVID-19 pandemic, Grand Cadaver quickly gained momentum with their debut EP, Madness Comes, recorded in just three days at Welfare Sounds in August 2020 and released in February 2021 by Majestic Mountain Records. The EP hit #9 on the Swedish Album Charts for physical copies and earned critical praise for it's ferocious yet catchy old-school vibe. Their debut full-length album, Into the Maw of Death, followed on October 29, 2021, winning "Best Metal" at the 2022 Manifest Awards for it's menacing, dynamic take on old-school death metal (OSDM). In 2023, they released their second album, Deities of Deathlike Sleep, which blended pummeling fury with doom and noise-rock influences, further showcasing their ability to honor tradition while carving their own path. A new EP, The Rot Beneath, was announced in May 2025, continuing their unrelenting assault. Grand Cadaver's live performances, including a debut in Gothenburg and a tour supporting At The Gates, are known for their skull-crushing intensity. The band also contributed a track to the 2024 Suicide Records compilation for Suicide Zero, reflecting their commitment to meaningful causes. With a discography that balances raw aggression and refined songwriting, Grand Cadaver remains a vital force in modern death metal, celebrating their roots while delivering a fresh, visceral experience.
