Release Date: 08/22/2025

Charles Stepney, A glorious Chicago collaboration comes next on Mirror Ball Recordings. Head honcho Terry Hunter and long-time studio cohort James Poyser delve into the vaults of legendary musician and composer Charles Stepney to re-produce 'You Make Me High' featuring Kitty Haywood. 'You Make Me High,' originally recorded in 1974, has been lovingly reconstructed by Terry and James, breathing new life into this timeless song. The original unreleased demo is also included for the first time ever, offering a rare but magical glimpse into it's creation. Although his life and legacy were tragically cut short, Charles Stepney was a musical genius whose work has influenced generations. Born in Chicago in 1931, he grew up surrounded by music, becoming a multi-instrumentalist and prolific composer. Stepney made his mark at Chess Records, collaborating with jazz legend Ramsey Lewis and producing for The Dells. He co-created Rotary Connection, the launch pad for Minnie Riperton, and produced her iconic debut solo album, Come to My Garden. Stepney's ability to fuse genres led to groundbreaking music that shaped the sound of Chicago Soul and beyond. Stepney's legacy reached it's pinnacle with his contributions to Earth, Wind & Fire, crafting timeless classics like 'Reasons' and 'Can't Hide Love.' He also collaborated with artists like Deniece Williams, The Emotions, and Muddy Waters. Despite his immense impact, Stepney remains a hidden figure in music history, often overshadowed by the artists he helped shape. Tragically, his career was cut short in 1976 by a fatal heart attack just as his influence was reaching new heights. A video piece on YouTube, 'Interrupted Greatness' tells the story of a husband, father, and visionary whose work changed music forever, highlighting the injustices of unpaid royalties, legal battles, and the recognition he never fully received Kitty Haywood is a soulful vocalist and songwriter best known for her work as the lead singer of The Haywood Singers, a celebrated vocal group that became a fixture in Chicago's vibrant music scene. Renowned for her rich, emotive voice and impeccable harmonies, Kitty contributed to numerous iconic recordings, collaborating with legendary artists and producers, including Charles Stepney and Earth, Wind & Fire. Her artistry embodies the spirit of Chicago Soul, blending heartfelt melodies with deep emotional expression. Beyond her performances, Kitty has played a pivotal role in shaping the sound of many celebrated records, leaving an indelible mark on the legacy of soul and R&B music. Terry Hunter is a celebrated, Grammy-nominated DJ and producer from Chicago, revered as one of the pivotal figures in House music. With a career spanning decades, Terry has built a reputation for blending soulful grooves with infectious beats, creating timeless tracks resonating worldwide. As a critical ambassador of Chicago House, he has worked with many iconic artists, including Chaka Khan, Mariah Carey, and Beyonce, seamlessly bridging the gap between classic soul and modern dance music. Known for his dynamic DJ sets and masterful remixes, Terry is the founder of labels Mirror Ball Recordings, T's Box & T's Crates and a driving force behind the globally celebrated Chosen Few DJs collective. His dedication to uplifting the soulful essence of house music continues to inspire new generations of music lovers and producers. James Poyser is a Grammy-winning musician, songwriter, and producer celebrated for his mastery of keyboards and role as a key architect of neo-soul music. A long-standing member of The Roots and the house band for The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Poyser's signature sound has shaped the work of iconic artists such as Erykah Badu, D'Angelo, Lauryn Hill, and Common. Known for his ability to craft lush, soulful arrangements, he has contributed to some of the most influential albums of the last few decades, including Erykah Badu's Mama's Gun and D'Angelo's Voodoo. Beyond his musical talents, Poyser's infectious humor and easygoing personality have made him a beloved figure both on and off stage. His work continues to push the boundaries of contemporary R&B, soul, and hip-hop, solidifying his legacy as a true innovator. Tracklisting: A1. Terry Hunter & James Poyser Club Mix (11:25) B1. Original Unreleased Demo Mix (6:28) B2. Terry Hunter & James Poyser Instrumental (5:59)
